 Why Give?

 

The Bible has a lot to say about giving. The question we must ask is not "What do people say about giving?", but "What does God's Word say about giving?"Giving is biblical. Biblical giving is generous and sacrificial because the Spirit of God moves thankful believers to meet the needs of God's work, God's workers, and God's children. God blesses those believers who respond to the Spirit's prompting to give sacrificially to His Son's work. This does not mean that if I give God will make me rich. What it does mean is that if I give God promises me a rewarding life both now and in eternity.

 

When God says to a Christian, "Show me your heart," He highlights one of the most sensitive areas of a believer's life--money. His Son put it this way in Matthew 6:19-21:

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your tresure is, there your heart will be also.

Generous biblical giving shows God where our heart really is. Those who truly love His Son and desire His purposes will support His Son's work.

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7)

God promises these blessings to generous biblical givers: Read Philippians 4:17-19.

• Sacrificial giving is an investment in eternity (Phil. 4:17). Generous biblical giving reaps eternal benefits. The Lord told His disciples that a gift to His cause builds treasure in heaven (Matt. 6:19-21). Givers know their investments are eternally secure.

• Sacrificial giving is an intimate experience of worship (Phil 4:18). Generous biblical giving indicates the intent of our hearts. Paul borrows from Old Testament language describing sacrifices pleasing to God (Genesis 8:21). Givers know their investments will be eternally appreciated by their Savior.

• Sacrificial giving is an insurance policy on earth (Phil. 4:19). Generous biblical giving guarantees God's supply or our needs. A gift to the cause of Christ builds security on earth (Matt. 6:33), for Israel in Malachi 3:10-12). Givers know they can claim this promise during times of financial crises.
